5 things to look for in your personal trainer

Looking for a personal trainer in the Leeds or Yorkshire Area?

Here’s a quick guide as to the qualities you should be looking for in your personal trainer.

Qualifications: All personal trainers should at least possess the basic level of competence in the industry which in the UK is a level 3 NVQ personal training qualification through the Register of Exercise Professionals.  That is a bare minimum. The United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) certifies strength and conditioning coaches which the competence level is well in excess of the level 3 NVQ. This is the credetial that our coaches possess so if your looking for a personal trainer in the Leeds area I would strongly suggest you look for this qualification.

Experience: Personal trainers should have experience with the clients that they are advertising they can help. For example, as far as personal trainers in Leeds go, I think that we are the most experienced in working  with athletes and sportsmen and women. Our gym is full day in day out with the clients and our speciality is in building athletisiscm and changing body composition whether it be stripping fat or building muscle. In truth there may be more experienced personal trainers in Leeds than us when it comes working with the obese, or the elderly for example. That doesn’t mean we won’t take these clients on, it just means we will be researching everything we can get our hands on before, during and throughout the process.

Good coaching! This really should be number 1 in the list as this is the difference when it comes to personal trainers in general. Many trainers are book smart but can’t coach for toffee! Its really important to get a trainer that is hands on, relates well to his or her clients and achieves results through solid coaching principles. How do you know a trainer is a good coach? Ask around and find some recommendations first. Nearly all of our work comes through word of mouth. Most good personal trainers will be similar. The second thing is to go and meet up and get an initial impression of the individual before you commit to anything. We offer a free initial assessment and meeting with no commitment in advance. This means you can come and check us out and see if we are right for you.

Look for a money back guarantee: This is a sure fire way for you to deduce whether your trainer is confident or not in their abilities to achieve results. We offer a full money back guarantee on all our packages. I think this is due to the results we have had and the confidence this has given us over the years.

Nice people! Yep sounds obvious doesn’t it but make sure the personal trainer you choose to work with is a nice caring person. I guess the best way to gauge this is through the initial meet as detailed in point 3, but it is a key quality to look for. You can’t possibly hope to achieve the results you are looking for if you don’t get on with the trainer, and in general, how are you going to enjoy the sessions? Personal training should be fun, not a choir!

So there are 5 key things to look for in your search for a good personal trainer.
