Elite Tennis Development
Tennis Strength and Conditioning
Our elite tennis development programme is focussed on 2 areas:
1.Performance Enhancement
2.Injury Prevention
GET FASTER, STRONGER, LEANER AND MORE EXPLOSIVE!!!
Both areas of the programme have shown excellent results with the players who have been through them. The performance enhancement side of the programme has consistently seen excellent results with our athletes. Brendan has shown substantial improvements in key areas of tennis performance. Some examples of this are:
-Improved serving velocity of around 10% in 10 weeks training with both adolescent and senior tennis players.
-Significantly improved agility on the planned and reactive agility tests we use. All of which are highly tennis specific and functional in nature.
-Improved footwork patterns around the ball which helps in both power in the stroke and recovery for the next ball.
-Significant increases in endurance allowing our players to perform longer and harder than ever before.
The injury prevention side of the programme has shown a reduction in injury rates across the board in our players. Our physio used to be snowed under with work, now they are nice and relaxed! We like to help everyone here at Athletes Unlimited!!
-We have seen significant reductions in our injury rates through all age groups.
-The programme works on reducing injuries in the key areas, whilst increasing stability, flexibility and mobility in related areas in order to prevent the injuries recurring in the future.
-Existing injuries can be accommodated through our sports rehabilitation team. We design the programme around your injuries whilst working on the non-injured areas at the same time.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The key areas of the programme are as follows:
1.Static Stretching- This is a big injury reduction area and also helps to increase tennis performance through improvements in movement quality.
2.Muscle Activation- Think of this as turning on the key muscles that will benefit tennis performance.
3.Mobility Training- A key area to develop for injury prevention and tennis performance.
4.Plyometric Training- This area is all about training to become more explosive whilst also incorporating stability and tennis specific movement.
5.Movement Training- This area is based your or the individuals needs and then programmed accordingly. This area incorporates tennis specific movement training as well as general agility training.
6.Injury Prevention Training- This is individual specific work focussing on core stability, joint specific injury prevention (eg shoulder preventative work) and tennis specific injury prevention work.
7. Conditioning Training- This is the classic fitness type work, however we do not do long distance running and endurance type training. We focus more on tennis specific training. Nearly all of our conditioning work in done on court and in intense in nature and mimics the demands of the sport.
8. Strength and Power Development- This is absolutely key in our players development. Most of this work in done in the gym environment and utilises many different exercises. This is the work that builds the foundations for all the other areas and is the cornerstone of the programme. Most importantly for the players all the programmes are individualised and are monitored and progressive in nature meaning that there is always variety and improvements are always being made.
THE INITIAL EVALUATION
Clearly we cannot evaluate where we are going to focus without a full assessment of physical qualities.
We look at your physical performance through general and tennis specific exercises and tests as well as your movement qualities which are examined through a musculoskeletal screening. The results of each comprehensive evaluation give us a detailed outline of your strengths and weaknesses which then forms the basis of the programme moving forward. The programme is then regularly monitored on a session by session basis.
